NCDC Announces 930 New COVID-19 Cases – Highest Daily Caseload Ever Recorded

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced 930 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, December 16 – making it Nigeria’s highest daily caseload ever recorded.

NCDC made the announcement via its official twitter handle with the cases detected in 21 states and FCT, raising serious concerns about the emergence of a second wave of infection.

The new toll comes four days after the country recorded its previous highest count — Nigeria recorded 796 positive cases on December 12.

Cases have been relatively high since early December with infection rates still concentrated in Nigeria’s two hardest hit cities – Lagos and Abuja.

The breakdown of the new cases is as follows; Lagos-279, FCT-179, Plateau-62, Kaduna-54, Kano-52, Katsina-52, Imo-42, Jigawa-42, Rivers-38, Kwara-30, Nasarawa-19, Yobe-15, Ogun-13, Borno-10, Oyo-9, Niger-9, Ebonyi-6, Bauchi-6, Edo-5, Taraba-4, Sokoto-2 and Cross River-2.

It would be recalled that on Tuesday, Nigeria recorded 74,132 coronavirus cases, 66,494 discharged and 1,200 deaths.

With the newly recorded toll, there are now 75,062 total cases, 66,775 discharged and 1,200 fatalities across the country.

In other news, Minister of Health, Osagie Ehanire, has said Nigerians should expect to receive the COVID-19 vaccine by the end of January 2021.

He stated this on Wednesday during the 28th Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

According to the Minister, a technical working group in the Ministry of Health is working on which vaccine will best suit Nigeria.
