Niger Speaker, Clerk Test Positive For COVID-19
Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Barrister Abdullahi Bawa Wuse and Clerk of the House, Mohammed Kagara have gone into self-isolation after testing positive for the coronavirus.
Commissioner of Information in the State, Muhammed Idris, made this known on Sunday, adding that the speaker and clerk had gone into self-isolation.
It was gathered that the lawmakers were asked to undergo a COVID-19 test after a member representing Gurara Local Government and Chairperson of the House Committee on Gender Affairs, Binta Mamman earlier tested positive for the virus two weeks ago.
The results of the test were released on Sunday, showing the positive result of the Speaker and Clerk of the House, according to Idris.
He said the results of some of the lawmakers are being awaited, adding;
We are yet to receive other results. But for now, many of us are in self-isolation.
The lawmakers and principal staff, it was learnt have gone into quarantine as the second wave of the pandemic hits the state.
Due to second wave in COVID-19 in the country, Niger State Government last week directed all civil servants to stay at home from Monday, December 21, 2020 till further notice except those on essential services.
It also ordered the closure of public and private schools and tertiary institutions across the state for the period of thirty days.
As at Sunday morning, Niger State recorded 381 confirmed cases, 61 deaths and 300 recoveries.
