A gas pipeline leakage along Arepo-Magboro axis of Ogun state, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been contained few hours after residents of the area cried out for help on Wednesday.
According to reports, the gas pipeline, located close to The PUNCH Newspaper headquarters, ruptured during construction works on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday.
A resident of Forthright Gardens Estate, Omobolaji, revealed that a loud sound was heard around 9:30 a.m.
According to him, the pipeline eruption caused panic as many residents of the estate rushed out of their apartments.
Nigerians who reside along that axis fled their homes over fear of a possible fire outbreak. Travelers who ply the expressway were also stranded.
Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, DG/CEO of Lagos State Emergency Management Agency in a statement has now said the leaking pipeline have been successful shut.
To foil a possible fire outbreak due to the release of gas into the air, dampening of the affected perimeter was ongoing, as at the time of filing this report.
He stated;
The Agency has responded to a ruptured pipeline near the Punch Newspapers HQ, inward Berger.
The accidental damage was caused by the Julius Berger crew working on the road. All responders are on the scene. The line has been shut down and the area cordoned off while motorists are being diverted. Operation is ongoing. Updates to follow.
