Arsenal will be appealing the red card shown to David Luiz in their match against Wolves on Tuesday night.

Luiz was shown a straight red card in first-half added time for a last-man foul on Willian Jose.

As Jose prevented a goal his foot appeared to catch Luiz on the knee and with that Referee Craig Pawson awarded a penalty which Ruben Neves scored and Luiz was also dismissed from the field.

However, Arsenal have studied the footage closely and are adamant Luiz did not commit a foul.

The club believe the Brazilian’s challenge on Willian Jose was accidental and that Luiz was clearly trying to avoid any contact with Jose before the striker went down. They are hopeful that this fact will support their bid to get his red card overturned.

Arsenal’s Manager, Mikel Arteta after their defeat said;

I’ve seen the replay 10 times, from five different angles and I cannot see any contact so I would like to see VAR has a different angles.

I’m sure they made the decision that they based on that they have seen something but I’m sitting here expecting to see something and I’m not seeing anything.

If there is any contact it is him to David. That’s what I’ve seen. I don’t know if they have a different angle to what I have or you have.

That’s where the disappointment is coming from. It’s hard enough to win games in this league and those big decisions are like that.

The Brazilian was sent off just before halftime on Tuesday night after bringing down Willian Jose in the penalty box, denying a goal-scoring opportunity despite replays showing that there had been a minimal contact between the two. Arsenal eventually got defeated 2-1 despite opening the scoring.

As it stands, Luiz will have to serve a one-match ban and will miss Arsenal’s next Premier League Fixture away at Aston Villa on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta will be hoping to be victorious in the appeal, as he club faces an attacking-minded Leeds United in eight days and Top of the League Table Manchester City on February 21 and the absence of the Brazilian will be a vacuum for his team.

Meanwhile, Arsenal is already certain to be without first-choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno for the next three matches, as the German was also dismissed during the same match.

He was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside the box late in the second half, Alex Runarsson was subsequently brought on to replace him between the sticks.

Arsenal’s loss at Molineux (Wolves’ home) leaves them in 10th, eight points behind fourth placed Leicester City who have a game in hand.
