Borussia Dortmund Confirm Sancho, Guerreiro, Reyna Will Miss Der Klassiker Against Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich is set to take on Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker on Saturday, with the visitors (Dortmund) looking to win their third successive league game to boost their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.
However, the host (Munich) must at least avoid defeat at Allianz Arena to ensure they remain top of the table ahead of RB Leipzig.
It would be recalled that Borussia Dortmund suffered a major blow on Friday when Jadon Sancho, Raphael Guerreiro and Giovanni Reyna were ruled out of Saturday’s Bundesliga game at Allianz Arena.
Winger Sancho and midfielder Guerreiro had been taken off with minor muscle injuries in their midweek German Cup quarterfinal against Borussia Mochenglabach win and have not fully recovered yet before the game. Sancho scored the only goal of the game before he was forced out.
Although, it is not clear why United States men’s national team player Reyna did not joined the squad on the trip to Munich.
Dortmund will therefore need to rely on Erling Haaland for their offensive production. The Norwegian has scored 27 goals in as many games across all competitions this season, he has been linked with a move from Dortmund should the club miss out on Champions League play next season.
Dortmund are currently fifth in the German top flight, sitting 13 points behind leaders Bayern heading into Saturday’s game. Bayern sit at top of the Bundesliga table on 52 points, two points ahead of RB Leipzig.
Bayern Munich were 5-1 winners in their last time out in the Bundesliga against FC Koln, after dropping five points in two games following their recent return from the Club World Cup in Qatar.
Although, Dortmund have not won a league match at Allianz Arena since 2014, Bayern Munich’s manager, Hans-Dieter Flick has warned that his side will take nothing for granted against their great rivals.
Flick said:
We are the league leaders and we want to protect our lead. We want to win the game and that is how we approach it. Dortmund are more consistent now. The last days and weeks showed it. [Coach] Edin Terzic does a very good job. The last games have been consistent, the results are there. They have gained in confidence and you can see it.
The Manager confirmed that Benjamin Pavard will not be fit in time for the match as the French defender is the latest Bayern player to test positive for the coronavirus and went into quarantine on February 18. He has returned to individual training this week but has not yet trained with the team.
Meanwhile, Dortmund’s interim manager, Edin Terzic has bounced back from a difficult period to guide Dortmund to four consecutive wins in all competitions.
They had a crucial Champions League last-16 first leg win at Sevilla and a nervy 1-0 win at Gladbach in DFB-Pokal quarter-final on Tuesday, which gave them two comfortable wins-to-nil against fierce rivals Schalke 04 and the struggling Arminia Bielefeld in BVB’s last two league games.
Sancho, Guerreiro and Reyna join the injured trio of Manuel Akanji, Axel Witsel and Marcel Schmelzer on Dortmund’s injury list.
