Boko Haram Reportedly Attack Military Base In Borno, Kill 30 SoldiersBoko Haram fighters on Sunday attacked a Nigerian Army location at 156 Battalion in Mainok area, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno state, killing over 30 soldiers, it has emerged. 

According to Gazette, military sources expressed that the insurgents disguised as friendly troops to enter the fortified headquarters.

Military sources said the timing of the attack raised suspicions that internal military activities, especially communication signals, might have been leaked to the insurgents.

The publication stated that the battalion’s commander who was a lieutenant-colonel was killed during the attack but his identity has been withheld until proper notification of his family by the military.

Also, the terrorists who came in no fewer than 15 gun trucks also burnt down Nigerian army tanker and some buildings in the military base, SaharaReporters stated. 

A source said the gunmen came in different groups and could not be counted, adding that 30 Nigerian soldiers were killed while others fled into the bush. 

The source stated;

The military super camp in Borno was attacked today by Boko Haram members with our men putting up a strong fight to defend base and ward off the insurgents.

But despite their gallant efforts, the soldiers were overwhelmed because they could not withstand the superior firepower of the terrorists. So far, we have recovered over 30 bodies of dead soldiers.

Boko Haram and its offshoot, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have killed thousands and displaced millions in North-Eastern Nigeria.

Nigerian military has repeatedly claimed that the insurgency had been largely defeated and frequently underplays any losses.

In the past months, soldiers have been targeted by the insurgents, who lay ambush on their path and hundreds of them have been killed since January 2021.
