Lagos State Government has suspended five female students of Oreyo Senior Grammar School, Igbogbo in Ikorodu area of the state, seen in a viral video in a video smoking shisha while dressed in school uniform.
Shisha smoking, also called narghile, water pipe, hookah or hubble bubble smoking, originates from the Middle East and certain areas of Asia, but has spread to other countries including Nigeria.
It is a way of smoking tobacco through a bowl with a hose or tube joined on. The tube has a mouthpiece that the smoker uses to breath in the smoke.
Reacting to the development that sparked outrage on social media, Lagos government, through Ministry of Education and Ministry of Youth and Social Development, said it had also sent the girls on rehabilitation.
According to SaharaReporters, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development.
Tokunbo noted that;
Appropriate steps are been taken to address the issue with the aim of preventing future occurrence in the state. The appropriate ministry is already intervening. You see why the role of parents is so critical. We can’t leave everything to government and school. This is heart wrenching.
In Nigeria, the prevalence rate of shisha smoking, especially among the youth, is rising, making it an issue of public health concern.
According to a renowned Doctor, Aproko Doctor, smoking shisha has a number of disadvantages.
