93rd Annual Academy Awards, which celebrates the achievements in television and film over the previous year, held on Sunday night, April 25, after being pushed back by two months.

The show was broadcast from two locations in Los Angeles: The Dolby Theatre and Union Station. Once again, there was no host for the third time following the 2019 controversy which forced Kevin Hart to step down from hosting the previous gig over his past homophobic tweets.

David Fincher’s Netflix film, Mank led the nominations with 10 in total, while The Father, Judas And The Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, South Of Metal, and The Trial Of The Chicago 7 all followed with six nods apiece.

However, US road movie “Nomadland” emerged as the big winner at the Oscars with three major prizes – Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Frances McDormand.

Six films took two awards, with The Father, Mank, Sound of Metal, Soul, Judas and the Black Messiah all managing a pair of prizes.

Chloé Zhao’s won the Oscar for best director for “Nomadland,” becoming just the second woman and the first woman of color to win the award. Katherine Bigelow was the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director with 2008’s The Hurt Locker.

Sir Anthony Hopkins, 83 pulled a surprise to win best actor in the final award of the night, besting Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer last year.

Hopkins’ win at 83 for his shattering portrayal of a dementia sufferer in “The Father” makes him the oldest actor to win a competitive Oscar in history. He did not travel to Los Angeles or a London venue to accept the prize.

Meanwhile, Daniel Kaluuya is the first black British actor to win an Oscar – for the best supporting award for “Judas And The Black Messiah”.

Now here are some other people who took home golden trophies. Youn Yuh-jung won Best Supporting Actress for MinariSoul” became Pixar’s latest Oscar winner for best animated feature, also picking up best score, while South African aquatic wildlife feature “My Octopus Teacher” won best documentary.

In addition, for the first time ever, two women were nominated for best director. Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson, part of the hair and makeup team behind “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” became the first Black stylists in Oscars history to win for best makeup and hairstyling.

Before the show, stars paused briefly for pictures and socially distanced interviews on what organizers called a “teeny-tiny red carpet”.
