Inter Milan Win First Serie A Title In 11 Years, Ending Juventus’ Long Reign
Inter Milan have on Sunday, May 2 clinched their first Serie A title in 11 years after Sassuolo drew 1-1 with Atalanta to ensure that Antonio Conte’s side are guaranteed the Italian league crown.
Milan are now 13 points clear in first place with four games remaining, and their triumph ends a run of nine consecutive title wins for Juventus.
The Black and Blues (Milan), who won 2-0 at relegated bottom club Crotone on Saturday, can now celebrate their first Scudetto (a decoration worn by Italian sports clubs that won the annual championship of their respective sport in the previous season) since the treble-winning 2009-10 season under Jose Mourinho.
Atalanta goalkeeper, Pierluigi Gollini saw red after 22 minutes, but the Bergamo club went in front 10 minutes later through a Robin Gosens strike.
Sassuolo equalised early in the second half through a Domenico Berardi penalty, but the hosts were then also reduced to 10 men when Marlon earned a second yellow and conceded a penalty.
However, Luis Muriel’s spot kick was saved by Andrea Consigli.
Inter have therefore overtaken their city rivals AC Milan, who have 18 Serie A titles, to become the second-most successful club in league history behind Juventus, who have 36 league wins.
They led the league standings for the last 13 rounds since beating Lazio 3-1 on February 14 and have improved on a runners-up finish in Conte‘s debut season of 2019-20.
The title is Conte’s fourth Serie A title, after winning the league in three consecutive seasons during his time as Juventus manager between 2011 and 2014.
