[BREAKING] Tokyo Olympics: Wrestler, Blessing Oborududu Makes History, Wins Nigeria’s First-Ever Medal In Wrestling
Nigerian wrestler, Blessing Oborududu has on Tuesday, August 3 made history as the country’s first ever Olympic medalist in wrestling.
The 10-time African champion fought valiantly to win silver medal, while USA’s Tamyra Stock-Mensah secure the gold medal with a 4-1 victory in women’s Wrestling 68kg.
The American World champion had overpowered Ukraine’s Alla Cherkasova 10-4 in the first semi-final to make it to the final.
Meanwhile, Blessing Oborududu earlier made history as the first Nigerian to reach the final of a wrestling event at the Olympics, after recording an impressive 7-2 victory against 2012 bronze medallist, Battsetseg Soronzonbold of Mongolia in the last four clash on Monday.
In advancing to her first Olympic semi-finals, she defeated defeated Azerbaijani’s Elis Manolova and Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan.
The final bout was a renewal of her rivalry with old foe Mensah, as they last met at the 2019 World championships in Kazakhstan, with the American getting the better of Oborududu on her way to the title.
With the latest victory, Nigeria has now secured two Olympic medals as long jumper Ese Brume earlier today won the first bronze for country.

Brume placed third after she surrendered silver to Britney Reese of the U.S. on countbacks as both leaped to 6.97m, while Malaika Mihambo of Germany got gold with her last jump with a leap of 7.00m.
