Guards Killed As Bandits Abduct Chinese Workers In Niger

Gunmen Kill 1, Abduct At Least 200 Islamiyya Students In NigerTwo Chinese expatriates, working at the ongoing Zungeru Hydro Electric Power Dam project in Niger State, have been kidnapped from the site they were working.

Two security guards were also killed during the attack, Ahmed Matane, secretary to the state government, confirmed the incident.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the workers were working on the connection of high tension extension from Zungeru Dam to Gusase community in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.

It was gathered that the armed men arrived at the construction site on motorcycles shooting sporadically to scare the people and carry out the mission unchallenged.

An eye witnessed said that they were shocked to hear gunshots and see the kidnappers with sophisticated weapons carrying out their mission while people scampered to safety.

He stated;

We were shocked with the sudden appearance of the armed kidnappers with their very sophisticated weapons, we were confused and don’t even know what to do or say.

The source further revealed that one of the Chinese workers was shot and two of their internal security guards were killed while the kidnappers left with two other Chinese workers.

Reacting in a statement, Wasiu Abiodun, police public relations officer of the state, said the police team attached to the site engaged the bandits in a gun duel, rescuing four of the expatriates.

He said;

On 04/1/2022 at about 1630hrs, suspected armed bandits attacked workers of Sino-Hydro Power Dam. The workers comprised of some Chinese expatriates and local staffs who were attacked while working on transmission line tower along Gussase village.

However, Police tactical team attached to the facility engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel while four of the expartriates were rescued with one of them and a local staff sustaining bullet injury and taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Abiodun stressed;

In the process of scampering for safety during the gun duel, three among the expatriates could not be accounted for presently.

He added that a joint team of police and military operatives are already on a manhunt for the hoodlums.
