Nigeria To Play Tunisia In AFCON Second Round As CAF Releases Knockout Stages Fixtures
Nigeria is set to play Tunisia on Sunday in the second round of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations being held in Cameroon, it has emerged.
The new development comes as Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the 16 teams that will play in the knockout stages of 2021 AFCON, following the completion of Group E and F fixtures on Thursday.
Nigeria finished Group D with a third successive win as they beat Guinea-Bissau 2-0, leaving runners-up Egypt to face Ivory Coast in the next round.
Three-time former winners Nigeria continued their fine start to the competition by sweeping aside Guinea-Bissau courtesy of second-half goals from Umar Sadiq and captain William Troost-Ekong.
Super Eagles topped their group, claiming the maximum nine points after winning all three matches with Egypt, Sudan and Guinea Bissau.
Super Eagles will stay in Garoua to play third-placed team Tunisia in the last 16 on Sunday.
Big names like Algeria and Ghana failed to make it past the group stages.
Tunisia, who lost to Gambia 1-0 on Thursday, booked their place to the knockout phase as one of the four third-placed countries.
On the other hand, Egypt, who finished second in Nigeria’s group will have to step up and beat Ivory Coast for a place in the Quarter-Finals.
