Apple Announces iPhone SE, iPad Air, Mac Studio At First Product Launch Of 2022

Apple has held its first product launch for 2022 tagged “peek performance”, unveiling a number of products that focused on speed.

The California-based company on Tuesday announced a new iPhone SE and a new iPad Air which feature fast 5G cellular connectivityBoth of those devices and the all-new Mac Studio desktop computer also have faster chips.

Here’s are some highlights from the event:

Apple during the one-hour video presentation hinted that a more powerful Mac Pro would be released soon but said details about the product would be revealed at another event.

The company’s head of hardware, John Ternus expressed;

One more product to go: Mac Pro. But that’s for another day.

Expect news on the iOS 15.4 update for iPhones

Look for news on a release date for Apple’s latest iPhone and iPad software. The iOS 15.4 update is expected to include a long-awaited revision to the face ID feature, which would allow users to unlock their iPhone while wearing a mask, just as masks mandates are lifting nationwide.

Other features include 37 new emojis and a new payment product allowing iPhone users to accept credit card payments without additional hardware.

Apple is adding two new colors for its iPhone. People can pre-order the iPhone 13 in “green” and the iPhone 13 Pro in “alpine green” starting Friday.

Apple unveils new budget iPhone SE, costs $429

In a video presentation, the company unveiled a new, faster iPhone SE, the entry-level version of its flagship product, bumping the price to $429 from the older version’s $399.

The new iPhone SE is an upgrade to the iPhone SE (2020) that was introduced in April 2020. In terms of an upgraded experience, the iPhone SE (2022) offers 5G connectivity and is powered by the A15 Bionic chip that was introduced last year. The previous model, in contrast, came with 4G support and an A13 Bionic chip.

The iPhone SE (2022) also features an improved rear camera. Alongside the three major hardware-level upgrades, the new iPhone SE shares the same design language that was introduced almost two years back.

The device looks like the previous iPhone SE, with a 4.7-inch rectangular display, and a TouchID fingerprint sensor. It’s equipped with a 12-megapixel rear camera.

The new iPhone SE comes in Midnight, Starlight, and (PRODUCT) RED colours.

It will retail for $429 and will hit store shelves on March 18. That’s more expensive than the $399 model Apple launched in 2020 and is a surprise bump in price.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook said the device was ideal for people who like smaller phones.

Apple announces new iPad Air with M1 chip, starting at $599

Apple announced a new version of its mid-range iPad, the iPad Air. It uses Apple’s M1 processor, which is the chip used in the pricier iPad Pro and MacBook Air models. It also has optional 5G support.

Its front-facing camera was upgraded to a 12-megapixel camera with a wide angle lens, which enables a feature called Center Stage that can follow subjects as they move around in the frame while videoconferencing.

The iPad Air (2022) comes in Blue, Space Grey, Starlight, Pink, and Purple colours.

The fifth-generation iPad Air, though, carries the same design that was introduced on its last model in 2020.

It will cost $599, with optional storage space and cellular upgrades. It’s the same price as it retailed for before. It will hit store shelves on March 18.

The new iPad Air also comes in 256GB Wi-Fi-only and Wi-Fi + cellular models that are yet to receive a price tag.

iPad Air (2022) specifications

The iPad Air (2022) runs on iPadOS 15. It features the same 10.9-inch LED-backlit Liquid Retina display with a 2360×1640 pixels resolution that was introduced on the model introduced in 2020.

The new iPad Air also comes with Touch ID support that is integrated into the power/ standby button.

The presence of the M1 chip is claimed to deliver up to 60 percent faster CPU performance and two times faster graphics performance over the previous iPad Air.

Apple has offered a 12-megapixel Wide rear camera on the iPad Air (2022) along with an f/1.8 lens that is identical to what was available on the last model. The camera supports features including Autofocus with Focus Pixels, Panorama (up to 63-megapixel), Smart HDR 3, Photo geotagging, Auto image stabilisation, and Burst mode.

Furthermore, it has 4K video recording support at 24, 25, 30, and 60fps frame rate.

The new iPad Air also comes with a 12-megapixel Ultra Wide front camera that supports machine learning-backed Center Stage, which helps adjust the camera view when using apps including FaceTime.

The iPad Air (2022) comes in 64GB and 256GB storage options. Connectivity options include 5G (optional), Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth v5, GPS/ A-GPS (in cellular version only), and a USB Type-C connector.

Apple has provided Apple Pencil (2nd generation) support on the new iPad Air and there’s also support for Magic Keyboard to deliver a notebook-like computing experience, using a floating design and built-in trackpad on the detachable keyboard.

In terms of battery life, Apple claims that the iPad Air (2022) delivers an “all-day battery life“. There is a 28.6Wh lithium-polymer battery that is rated to deliver up to 10 hours of Web browsing or video playback on Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi + Cellular variant, on the other hand, is claimed to deliver up to nine hours of Web browsing on a single charge.

The built-in battery on the new iPad Air supports fast charging, and a 20W USB-C power adapter is included in the retail box.

Apple announces Mac Studio with M1 Ultra chip

Apple introduced the first new Mac model in years with the Mac Studio, a display-less desktop computer. It’s a cube-shaped aluminum box with USB-C ports and a SD card slot on the front.

It’s taller than the existing Mac Mini. The additional height is used for big fans to keep the computer’s temperature down.

Apple also announced a separate 27-inch display called Studio Display with 5K resolution, equipped with an Apple chip, speakers, and built-in camera.

The computer uses the high-performance M1 Ultra processor, which the company says has more power than its existing M1 chips.

Mac Studio with an older M1 Max chip starts at $1999. The model with an M1 Ultra starts at $3999.

Apple introduces Studio Display


Apple announced its new Studio Display on Tuesday.

It offers a 5K Retina 27-inch screen, speakers and has a built-in camera. Users can also choose between an all-aluminum enclosure with a tilting stand or a tilt and height-adjustable stand option. The screen can also be used to fast-charge Apple’s latest MacBook Pros when it’s plugged in.

It costs $1,599 and is available for pre-order today.

In conclusion, Apple’s event on Tuesday comes months after its fall product updates, when it introduced a new line of computers with processors made by Apple, a third generation of AirPods, the iPhone 13, and a new Apple Watch and iPad.
