The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has chosen Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State, as its presidential candidate.
This was revealed by Kwankwaso during the NNPP’s convention in Abuja on Wednesday.
The former governor recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the National Peoples Party, NNPP.
He was picked unanimously by NNPP’s 774 party delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), through a voice voting.
Last week, the founding National Chairman of the NNPP, Boniface Aniegbonam, had said Kwankwaso was the party’s only presidential candidate for the 2023 elections.
Aniegbonam had disclosed this during a press conference in Lagos State.
Kwankwaso was the Governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003 and 2011 to 2015.
The former governor recently dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the NNPP.
In his speech, Kwankwaso promised to return Nigeria to its pride of place in the comity of nations if he is elected next year as Nigerian president.
After giving a brief overview of his background, the former Minister of Defense stated that the time has come for Nigerians to give the NNPP the opportunity to lead the country back to greatness and restore its previous grandeur.
He further stated that as a grassroots politician and friend of the talakawas (the oppressed), people in positions of power already know that their days are numbered in Nigerian politics.
Kwankwaso also noted that if given the chance to lead Nigeria in 2023, he will improve the educational sector, claiming that his achievements as governor of Kano State speak for themselves.
He further pledged that his administration will continue to work with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in order to advance the sector.
