20 Motorcycles, Okada Set Ablaze Over Bike Accident, Killing One

Over 20 commercial motorcycle riders lost their bikes. The bikes also known as Okada have been set ablaze by angry youths at Jakande Estate, Isolo, Lagos State, on Thursday, June 9.

The incident happened following a fatal accident involving an Okada rider, which lead to the death of one person.

According to an eyewitness, the incident occurred after a rider plying a one-way route reportedly knocked down a pedestrian who died immediately.

In retaliation, youths in the area hijacked motorcycles in sight and thus set them on fire.

While reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said the Divisional Police Officer in the area Folorunsho Gabriel responded to the emergency immediately; rescuing the suspect from the mob attack and also evacuating the corpse from the scene.

The spokesperson expressed:

The Police arrived at the scene on time and rescued the motorcycle rider from lynching. The Police immediately took the rider to the hospital for treatment and also evacuated the pedestrian. Before the Police arrived back at the scene, a mob was already burning the motorcycles left behind by the fleeing riders.

The Lagos State Police Command condemns jungle justice in very strong terms. Anyone found engaging in such would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Normalcy has returned to the area as security operatives are on the ground to forestall further mob action.

Two days ago, some commercial motorcyclists and police officers attached to the Lagos task force have clashed in the Idi-Araba axis of the state.

Lagos government banned motorcycle operations in some locations which took effect from June 1, 2022.

The affected Local Government Areas are Apapa, Eti Osa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Surulere and Lagos Mainland.

In enforcing the ban, authorities have in the last few days seized and crushed thousands of bikes, sparking outrage among some Lagosians.

Unfortunately, trouble began in Idi Araba area after some task force officers deployed to the area; to enforce the okada ban and impounded some motorcycles.

The deployment of the police officers angered the motorcyclists in the area who were acting in a breach of the state government’s directive.
