Jennifer Hudson Becomes Second Black Woman To Attain EGOT Status With Win At 2022 Tony AwardAmerican singer and actress, Jennifer Hudson has become the second black woman in history to attain the EGOT status and her wins are being celebrated globally.

Jennifer won the Tony award as a producer on A Strange Loop, the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical written by Michael R Jackson that follows a Black gay man as he tries to write a musical while struggling with his identity. It won an award for Best Musical.

Specifically, EGOT refers to individuals who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony over the course of their careers in entertainment.

Only 16 individuals in history have achieved an EGOT in competitive categories. Before last night’s Tony Awards, Whoopi Goldberg was the first black person and female to achieve EGOT status.

Other figures who have achieved this feat include Rita Moreno, Alan Menken, Andrew Lloyd Webber, John Legend, Mike Nichols and Mel Brooks.

17th Person In History To Achieve An EGOT

Now, Jennifer Hudson is the 17th person in history to achieve an EGOT. Apart from this, she is also the youngest woman to achieve this feat at 40. 

The singer, who finished seventh in the ‘American Idol’ season three, had a long but impressive journey to achieve the rare status.

Hudson took the first step towards achieving EGOT with her Oscar win in the category of best supporting actress for her performance in 2006’s “Dreamgirls.”

Then she netted two performing Grammys — one for best musical theater album for “The Color Purple” in 2017 and another for best R&B album for her self-titled album in 2009.

Following this, the Hollywood star won a Daytime Emmy for executing producing the VR-animated film “Baba Yaga“.

Hudson first rose to fame as a finalist in the third season of American Idol in 2004, eventually placing seventh out of the bevy of singers looking to be just the third-ever Idol winner.

Her impressive vocal chops and inviting personality opened many doors for Hudson, who would go on to make her Oscar-winning film debut in Dreamgirls in 2006.

Hudson has since gone on to make a name for herself as an actress in such films as Sex and the City (2008), The Secret Life of Bees (2008), and most recently in Respect (2021), where she portrays the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin.

Since 2008, the Giving Myself star has released four studio albums, which includes the Respect soundtrack. The first two of her records were eventually certified gold in the U.S.

Hudson also made her Broadway debut in the hit musical, The Color Purple in 2015.
