For the 17th time this year, Nigeria’s national grid system has failed.
Power distributors in Kaduna and other parts of the country reported on Sunday, June 12, that they couldn’t get bulk electricity from the national supply line.
Kaduna Electric announced;
We regret to inform you that the power outage being experienced in our franchise states is due to system collapse of the national grid. The collapse occurred at about 18:47 pm this evening hence the loss of supply on all our outgoing feeders
Power supply shall be restored as soon as the national grid is powered back
The number of states affected by today’s grid failure is unknown.
This was the 17th time the national grid has failed this year. While some collapses were not made public since they only lasted a few minutes, many others were, and in some cases lasted days.
According to a top official of a Generation Company (GenCo) the nationwide outage began around 6pm as the generation from various power plants dipped. “We experienced a grid collapse this evening at 18:49 hours,” said the official.
There are up to 24 operational Gencos on the grid system, but only Delta (Ughelli) GenCo generated up to 371MW on Sunday evening; Rivers IPP generated 156MW, Omotosho 130MW, and Olorunsogo 128MW, while the remaining nine GenCos did not generate up to 100MW.
Regrettably, the baseload GenCos, which consist of three hydropower facilities that ensure stable electricity, were impacted.
Some 45 minutes before the national grid crashed, Kainji had 51MW, Jebba had 88MW, and Shiroro had no power.
There has been a slowdown in electricity generation, according to reports from Nigeria System Operations, a division of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and grid management.
