The Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fare hike that has been proposed for several routes in Lagos State has been criticized by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who are calling for a reversal of the plan.
In a statement released on Saturday, July 2, in Lagos, the party’s Lagos State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Hakeem Amode, chastised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for allowing such an increase in BRT fares, claiming it would worsen the suffering of the common people.

Amode said that it was unjustifiable for the APC-led government to attribute the increase on the pump price of diesel, which rose from N187 to N830, and the lack of spare parts.
According to him, with the crippling economic situation being experienced by Lagos residents daily, the government showed a lack of compassion and total disregard for the plight of the citizens of the state.
Amode noted;
Sanwo-Olu-led APC administration has completely abdicated its responsibility to the people of the state and turned a blind eye to their predicament.
The few ‘luxuries’ that the people benefit from the state are being taken away.
Now is not the time for any form of increment, as the people of the state have suffered enough under this unsympathetic government.
Amode said the proposed BRT increase should be “shelved so as not to worsen the citizens’ situation in the face of dilapidated infrastructure, insecurity, hunger, rise in crime”, among others being experienced by the people of the state.
A flat N100 rise in bus fares for all Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Standard Routes was agreed by Sanwo-Olu on Thursday and will take effect on July 13.
A bus travel from Ikorodu-TBS will now cost N600 instead of N500, and Berger to Ajah will now cost N700 instead of N600.
Also, the fee from Oshodi to Abule Egba would increase from N350 to N450, and the fare from Abule Egba to CMS-Obalende will be N600.
