A Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday, July 1, ordered the Nigerian Immigration Service and three banks to immediately provide Ike Ekweremadu, the incarcerated former vice president of the Nigerian Senate, with information about David Ukpo so that he might represent himself in a London court.

The order was given by Justice Inyang Ekwo as she rendered her decision in a case brought by Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice.

Following the defendants’ failure to appear in court to contest the lawsuit, a judgment was rendered against them.

According to the court order, Senator Ekweremadu must receive access to all official documents pertaining to Ukpo, including the account opening package, in order to determine the Ukpo’s actual age.

Ukpo had claimed at a London court that he was a minor of 15 years old which led to the arrest and detention of the Nigerian Senator.

Other defendants are the Comptroller General (C-G), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS); Stanbic-IBTC Bank, United Bank of Africa (UBA), and Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc as 2nd to 5th respondents, respectively.

There had been differing reports over the arrest of the former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife in the United Kingdom.

In order to clarify the situation, the Nigeria Immigration Service, on Sunday, June 26, revealed that the agency adhered to due process in issuing a Nigerian passport to Mr David Nwamini, who was allegedly trafficked to the United Kingdom for organ harvesting by Ekweremadu.

Nwamini had allegedly claimed to be a minor after he arrived in the UK where he was to donate his kidney to Ekweremadu’s daughter.

However, photos of his Nigerian passport, as circulated on social media, showed his date of birth to be October 12, 2000, placing him at 21 years old.

Addressing the controversy surrounding his age, the Comptroller General of the NIS, Mr Idris Jere, at a press conference on Sunday, said Nwamini is indeed 21.
