Mary Njoku Says ‘Afrobeat Originated From Nigeria’
Leading Nollywood actress, Mary Njoku is advocating for the proper preservation of the music genre, Afrobeat.
According to the ROK TV frontwoman, the music genre was formulated in Nigeria, therefore, no western nation should make claim to it’s origination.
She also reiterated that Afrobeat belongs specifically to ‘Nigeria’ and not ‘Africa’.
The music genre, Afrobeat was popularized by the legendary musician and social activist, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti in the late 60s and early 70s. He used the music genre to speak against the government in power at the time and also, used his music to promote pan-Africanism and served as a form of social realism.
