Lagos Govt Introduces Anti-Okada Squad To Collaborate With Police

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed that commercial motorbikes, sometimes known as “okadas,” are still prohibited in 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 15 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the city.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, revealed this in a statement on Monday.

He reiterated the state government’s prohibition on okada in the affected areas while on a visit of several restricted areas within the state where a considerable number of motorcycles (okada riders) had resumed operations.

Giwa identified the LGAs as Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere and Eti-Osa, adding that the LCDAs as Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba and Coker Aguda. With others at; Itire-Ikate, Eti-Osa West, Iru Victoria Island, Ikoyi-Obalende, Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Ejigbo, Bariga and Odi-Olowo.

The governor’s aide warned the public to cooperate, telling both riders and passengers to stay off.

He explained that, in accordance with the provisions of Section 46, sub-sections 1, 2, and 3 of the Transport Sector Reform Law (TSRL), 2018, any defaulter is subject to three years in prison if captured and prosecuted, with their motorcycles impounded and crushed in plain sight.

Giwa also appealed for general support for government initiatives, stressing that despite the interventions already in place and feasible alternatives offered to okada operators that were meant to lessen the impact of the prohibition on their livelihood, the obstinate riders have refused to take advantage of them.
