Children Of The Corn: Nigerians Threaten To Boycott New Hollywood Horror Movie
The remake of the 1984 American horror movie, Children of The Corn was released on March 21st, 2023 and Nigerians are threatening to boycott the new movie for ‘jocular’ reasons.
‘Corn’ was one of the pivotal produce the Nigerian president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his presidential campaign promised that his fellow countrymen will consume when he enters into power.
In March 2021, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu during his campaign admonished the Nigerian government to recruit 50 million youths into the Army to fight insecurity.

Tinubu, while offering the advice stated that the proposed recruited soldiers would eat cassava, yam and corn.
He had this to say,
“We are under-policed and we are competing with armed robbers and bandits to recruit from the youths who are unemployed —33 per cent unemployed?
“Recruit 50 million youths into the army, what they will eat —cassava, corn, yam, will grow here.
“Don’t talk about illiteracy, anybody who can hold a gun, who can handle a gun, who can cock and shoot is technically competent to repair a tractor in the farm.”

Nigerians Develop Infuriated At Movie Title, Children Of The Corn
Following the announcement, citizens of Nigeria on the microblogging platform, flooded the comment section and asked for the movie to not be brought to the country’s cinemas.
As explained earlier, the reason for this is because of the word ‘Agbado’ which is Yoruba for corn, and it was popularized by president-elect, and former APC candidate Bola Tinubu, who talked about how it can be fed to young to-be-recruited soldiers while he was campaigning.
It became a meme on the internet that people used to make jokes and banter online; however, the movie release which came after Tinubu won the presidential election caused a sour taste in the mouths of people.
