An investigation has been launched as a result of Senator Aisha Binani’s premature declaration by Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the resident electoral commissioner for Adamawa State.

In place of the returning officer, Mele Lamido, Ari declared Binani the victor of the governorship election for Adamawa State on Sunday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission postponed the publication of the state supplemental election results from 1 am on Sunday to 11 am after releasing the results from 11 of the 20 local government districts where reruns were held.

The All Progressives Congress’ Senator Aishatu Dahiru, commonly known as Binani, was proclaimed the winner of the governorship contest by the REC when it arrived at the state INEC headquarters in Yola before 11 a.m.

The PDP sought Yunusa-Ari’s immediate arrest in response to the REC’s decision, which sparked uproar across the country and was supported by Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate.

The misbehaving REC might serve 36 months in prison if proven guilty.

Binani’s declaration, which the Independent National Electoral Commission eventually overturned, caused tension in Adamawa State on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Ari has been summoned by the commission in order to face a panel in Abuja over his actions as Nigerians await the next step regarding the Adamawa polls.
