APAPA: Labour Party Urges Tribunals To Disregard Letters Over Withdrawal Of Petitions

The Labour Party has argued that the ruling invalidating the election of its candidates in the general elections of 2023 is irrelevant, ridiculous, and without merit.

On Friday, Justice Mohammed Yunusa of the Federal High Court in Kano invalidated the candidatures of Dr. Alex Otti, the newly elected governor of Abia State, and all other Labour Party candidates in the states of Abia and Kano.

But in a statement released on Friday and signed by its acting national publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party expressed displeasure with the speed with which Kano High Court Justice Yunusa completed his or her duties in just 48 hours.

Ifoh claimed that the suspended party members who were Lamidi Apapa’s supporters, the former deputy national chairman, brought the case before the court.

He added that the Labour Party which is mentioned as a respondent was not aware of any suit against in Kano State as the party was not served with any summons.

According to the party, the former National Legal Adviser, Samuel Akingbade Oyelekan, who acted as its representative in the case, has since ceased from being an officer of the party and his appearance for the party is not with any authorization from the leadership of the party’s National Working Committee.

The judgement is not only inconsequential but also laughable and holds no water. The court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain election matters at a time when elections have since been concluded and winners emerged. The Kano Court is also not a tribunal which has the constitutional powers to entertain pre-election matters.
