The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, expressed deep alarm today over the recent wave of attacks in Plateau State, Nigeria, that claimed the lives of nearly 200 people, according to local authorities.

“I am horrified by the brutal violence unleashed against innocent civilians in Plateau State,” said Mr. Türk. “These attacks, targeting communities in a region already marred by religious and ethnic tensions, are utterly unacceptable.”

The armed group attacks, which occurred between Saturday evening and Tuesday morning, have left a trail of devastation across the region, situated on the dividing line between Nigeria’s predominantly Muslim north and Christian south.

“The perpetrators of these heinous crimes must be identified and held accountable,” Mr. Türk emphasized. “The Nigerian authorities must take all necessary measures to protect civilians and ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.”

The High Commissioner also urged all parties in the region to refrain from further violence and to engage in peaceful dialogue to address the underlying causes of the conflict. “The long-standing tensions in Plateau State can only be resolved through genuine reconciliation and respect for diversity,” he stated.

Mr. Türk called on the international community to provide support to the Nigerian government in its efforts to restore peace and stability in the region. He also urged all stakeholders to prioritize the protection of civilians and to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
