In a significant development, the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended Bello Mohammed, 28, suspected to be part of a gang responsible for the kidnapping and killing of Nabeeha, daughter of Barrister Ariyo in Bwari, Abuja, on January 13, 2024. The arrest, announced on Sunday by Police Headquarters Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, also highlights the commendable conduct of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Tafa Division, SP Idris Ibrahim, who rejected a N1 million bribe offered by the suspect.
According to the statement, Mohammed was arrested on January 20th in a Tafa area hotel based on intelligence. He was found in possession of N2.25 million, believed to be ransom proceeds. During interrogation, he confessed to his involvement in the Bwari kidnapping and the killing of Nabeeha, as well as the involvement of the five bandits recently neutralized by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) under the leadership of Mai Gemu (aka Godara).

Adding a dramatic twist to the story, the statement reveals that Mohammed attempted to bribe the DPO with N1 million to impede the investigation. However, SP Ibrahim refused the offer and proceeded to carry out his duties diligently. This act of integrity earned him praise from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, who commended him for his commitment and professionalism.
The IGP also directed the transfer of Mohammed to the DFI-IRT in Abuja for further investigation and the apprehension of other suspects involved in the Bwari kidnapping and other criminal activities. The suspect is currently cooperating with the police in their investigation.
This development marks a significant step forward in the ongoing fight against kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria. The arrest of Mohammed and the potential dismantling of the associated gang offer hope for justice in the Bwari case and increased security in the region. Additionally, the DPO’s commendable refusal of the bribe serves as a positive example for law enforcement officers across the country.
However, challenges remain in tackling widespread criminal activity. Continued efforts are needed to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve police resources and training, and address the underlying socioeconomic factors that contribute to crime. Nevertheless, the apprehension of Mohammed and the actions of SP Ibrahim offer a glimmer of hope for a safer and more secure future for Nigerians.
