Relief washed over Ekiti State on Sunday, February 4th, as the students and staff of Apostolic Faith Nursery and Primary School, Emure, kidnapped on Monday, January 29th, were finally released from their captors.
Details remain somewhat sketchy, but reports indicate that the six pupils and four staff members were freed earlier on Sunday morning. While official statements regarding the circumstances of their release are yet to be released, early reports suggest negotiations may have played a role.
A confirmation from the Ekiti State Police Command Spokesperson, Sunday Abutu on Sunday morning, however, indicated that the driver is dead.
The police PPRO said, “All victims were rescued today at about 1.30am, but unfortunately, we lost the driver who was suspectedly killed by the abductors.”
A Community in Anguish:
For four agonizing days, families, friends, and the entire Ekiti community waited with bated breath for news of the abducted children. The incident sparked outrage and calls for improved security measures in schools across the state. Public figures, including President Bola Tinubu, had condemned the kidnapping and directed authorities to prioritize the victims’ safety.
