Nigerian universities could face disruptions as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) announced a one-week warning strike starting next Monday, March 18th.
The union, which represents non-teaching staff such as administrative workers and technicians, is protesting the alleged withholding of four months’ salaries by the federal government following a nationwide strike in 2022.
According to SSANU officials, their members were excluded from a recent government directive that authorized the payment of outstanding salaries to university staff. The union views this as a deliberate neglect of their grievances.
“We have been patient, but the government’s inaction leaves us with no choice,” said vice president of the association, Dr Abdussobuur Salaam, in a statement. “This one-week warning strike is a chance for them to address our demands. Otherwise, we will be forced to escalate to an indefinite strike.”
The potential disruption comes at a critical time for Nigerian universities, as many institutions are already grappling with challenges like underfunding and infrastructure deficiencies.
The impact of the strike remains to be seen. However, it could affect administrative functions, examinations, and other university operations. Students and parents are advised to stay informed about developments and potential delays.
