Lagos lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has condemned the recent increase in electricity tariffs, calling it “unlawful” and promising legal action. In a statement, Falana said he would begin “raising serious objections” on Monday, citing specific legal procedures that have been bypassed.
He made this call during a Sunday interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
Falana criticized the government’s justification for the hike, claiming it would only generate a fraction of the targeted revenue. He expressed concern that the burden would soon fall on lower-income consumers who are currently shielded from the increase.
“The government is increasing tariffs to assist failing electricity distribution companies, most of which are now under the control of banks and the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON),” Falana stated. He further argued that these institutions lack the expertise to manage the power sector effectively.
Falana’s comments come amidst ongoing controversy surrounding the electricity tariff increase. The government argues the hike is necessary to improve service delivery, while many Nigerians fear it will place an undue financial strain on households.
It remains to be seen whether Falana’s legal challenge will be successful. However, his intervention highlights the public’s dissatisfaction with the rising cost of electricity and raises questions about the government’s long-term strategy for the power sector.
