The Lagos State Government has moved to dispel rumors circulating on social media regarding the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
In a statement issued Wednesday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, clarified that the state has no plans to reinstate the monthly sanitation with restrictions on movement.
The statement described the viral news as “the work of mischief makers” aimed at confusing residents. It urged Lagosians to disregard the information and go about their business as usual, emphasizing that there will be no restrictions on the last Saturday of July.
Focus on Community Engagement, Not Restrictions
Wahab clarified Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s announcement made during a recent sanitation sensitization exercise. The Governor, according to the statement, proposed a new initiative: a weekly community-based sensitization and awareness program for residents.
“The Governor also stated that State Government officials will lead from the front every week by going round to join residents in cleaning their environment in a voluntary manner while preaching the message,” the statement reads.
Encouraging a Culture of Cleanliness
The Commissioner emphasized that Governor Sanwo-Olu did not announce the return of the monthly environmental sanitation or movement restrictions in July or any foreseeable future. He concluded by calling on residents to adopt a culture of continuous cleanliness, not waiting for a government mandate to clean their surroundings.
This clarification from the Lagos State Government aims to alleviate confusion caused by the circulating fake news. While the monthly environmental sanitation with movement restrictions remains a thing of the past, the focus appears to have shifted towards a more collaborative community-based approach to promoting cleanliness within the city.
