Legendary Singer Onyeka Onwenu Passes On
In a tragic turn of events, Onyeka Onwenu, the legendary Nigerian singer and icon, has passed away.
Shortly after a vibrant performance at Stella Okolie’s 80th birthday celebration, the MD of Emzor Pharmaceuticals, Onyeka, 72, collapsed.
They immediately rushed her to Reddington Hospital, where she sadly passed away despite all efforts.
Her death marks the end of an era for Nigerian music, as she leaves behind a legacy of timeless songs and unforgettable performances.
Onyeka Onwenu immensely and irreplaceably contributed to the cultural and musical landscape of Nigeria. Her fans, colleagues, and countless lives she touched through her music and activism will deeply miss her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.
Born on January 31, 1952, in Imo State, Nigeria, Onwenu started her career as a singer and quickly rose to prominence with her distinctive voice and meaningful lyrics. Her music often addressed social issues, and she became known as the “Elegant Stallion” for her grace.
She was also a talented actress, starring in numerous Nollywood films where she showcased her versatility and depth. Beyond her work in entertainment, Onwenu was a journalist and politician, serving as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture.
