In a move welcomed by many Nigerians, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the lifting of the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) visa ban on Nigerian citizens. This news comes after months of discussions and interventions by the Nigerian government.
While Minister Keyamo confirmed the decision, he also acknowledged additional processes needed before Nigerians can resume applying for UAE visas.
“Following successful talks and extensive, mutually beneficial negotiations between the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, an agreement was reached allowing for the resumption of travel to the UAE for Nigerian passport holders,” he said.
“This agreement includes updated controls and conditions to facilitate obtaining a UAE visa.”
In October 2022, the UAE imposed visa restrictions on Nigerians alongside citizens from several other African countries. The reasons behind the ban were not officially disclosed, but some speculated it was linked to concerns about passport security and potential overstays.
The visa ban significantly impacted Nigerians seeking to travel to the UAE for business, tourism, or to visit family members residing there. Many Nigerians have business interests in Dubai, a major trade hub in the Middle East. Additionally, Dubai is a popular tourist destination for Nigerians due to its luxury shopping, modern attractions, and proximity to other Middle Eastern countries.
