Chidimma Adetshina, a finalist in the Miss South Africa pageant, is facing potential disqualification due to allegations of identity fraud involving her mother.

The Department of Home Affairs has launched an investigation into Adetshina’s citizenship, revealing potential fraud and identity theft.

The inquiry was prompted by online controversy and requests from pageant organizers to verify Adetshina’s citizenship.

Preliminary findings suggest that Adetshina’s mother may have committed fraud and identity theft, although Adetshina herself was not involved due to being a minor at the time.

“Prima facie reasons exist to believe that fraud and identity theft may have been committed by the person recorded as Chidimma Adetshina’s mother,” the Department stated. “Throughout this process, we are guided by our commitment to restore and uphold the rule of law as well as the rights of all parties.”

The investigation has also uncovered a South African woman whose identity may have been stolen, resulting in significant consequences. The Department is seeking legal advice on Adetshina’s citizenship status and potential criminal charges.

Adetshina’s eligibility for the pageant, scheduled for August 10, is under pressure. The controversy has sparked discussions on xenophobia, Afrophobia, and black-on-black discrimination in South Africa, highlighting deep-seated tensions.

If found to have obtained citizenship fraudulently, Adetshina may be removed from the competition, casting a shadow over her advocacy work against violence towards women and children.
