Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), issued a surprise apology during the church’s ongoing annual national youth convention, retracting his previous statement that believers who don’t pay tithes won’t make it to heaven.
“I was wrong,” Adeboye admitted, emphasizing that the Bible doesn’t support such a claim. Instead, he cited Hebrews 12:14, which emphasizes the importance of living a life of peace and holiness to see God. “It is possible to be right and wrong at the same time,”
Adeboye explained, using the example of how scientific understanding of light’s trajectory has evolved. “For years, we thought light travels in a straight line, but later discovered it travels in waves.”
Adeboye’s apology marks a significant shift in his stance, sparking discussion among Christians and theologians about the role of tithing in salvation.
I’m apologizing for saying,’If you don’t pay tithe, you won’t make it to heaven.’ I’m sorry, that’s wrong, and it’s not in the Bible. What the Bible says is, ‘Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God.
