Adelabu Vows to Act as UI Students Protest UCH Power Outage
Medical students at the University of Ibadan (UI) have staged a protest at the University College Hospital (UCH) over a prolonged power outage that has lasted “more than 100 days”.
The students, who are trained at the teaching hospital, said the lack of electricity had severely disrupted academic and clinical activities, as well as their general welfare.
During the demonstration on Monday, they carried placards with messages such as “We are tired of 100 days of darkness; Save UCH” and demanded immediate government intervention.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) disconnected UCH from the power grid in November 2024, citing unpaid debts.
According to NAN, Bayo Adelabu, the minister of power, and the IBEDC management held a meeting at UCH over the lingering power outage during the protest.
The students insisted that the minister should provide solutions to the outage, which had been disrupting their academic and clinical activities.
Bolaji Aweda, president of the UI student union, called for the implementation of a 50 percent electricity subsidy that had been promised to tertiary healthcare institutions.
In response, Adelabu assured the students that the government and UCH management would “look into the real issues” and work towards a permanent solution.
He promised to proffer a permanent solution to the situation and that the institution would soon be reconnected by IBEDC.
