Federal Government has announced that it considering the implementation of ‘precision lockdown’ in 18 local government areas identified as the hotspots of the coronavirus infection in the country.
Secretary to the FG and chairman of the COVID-19 Presidential Task Force, Boss Mustapha said the 18 local government areas account for 60% of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.
Mustapha stated that lockdown must be imposed on the areas to contain the spread of the pandemic in the country.
He revealed this after his committee briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday on the status of the fight against COVID-19.
According to him, the precision lockdown would be implemented by the government of the states where the 18 local governments are.
He however revealed that Nigeria is yet reach its peak and with 39 molecular labs, the number of infections will continue to rise.
While urging state governors to drive the process, Mustapha also asked all local authorities, including religious and traditional leaders, to ensure compliance to non pharmaceutical interventions.
On the low mortality rate in the country, the Chairman said 80 percent of the infections were in the age bracket of 31 to 40 years, which he described as a very active part of the population.
He added that everything is being done to protect the vulnerable such as the elderly and those with underlying illnesses.
Some of the states with the highest number of cases are Lagos (10,144), FCT (1792), Oyo (1306) Kano (1200), Rivers (1056), Edo (962), Delta (912), Ogun (782) and Kaduna (703).
There are a total of 24,567 confirmed cases, 9007 successfully managed cases and 565 deaths, as at Sunday night.
