Malik B, Founding Member Of The Roots And Grammy Winner, Dies At 47
Malik B, a founding member of The Roots, an American hip-pop band, has passed on at 47.
The singer, whose real name is Malik Abdul Basit was a major contributor to his group, which includes Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and Tariq ‘Black Thought’ Trotter.
The music group broke the sad news in a statement on its social media pages on Wednesday night but did not disclose the cause of his death.
In the statement, the group described his death as a “great loss”, adding that Malik B, would be remembered for his charming personality and his devotion to Islam.
The group also appealed to the public to respect the privacy of the deceased’s family during the mourning period.
The statement reads;
It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long time Roots member Malik Abdul Basit.
May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam, His loving brotherhood and his innovation as one of the most gifted MCs of all time. We ask that you please respect his family and extended family in our time of mourning such a great loss.
The American rapper, born on November 14, 1972, featured on the first four albums released by The Roots, before exiting the group to start his solo career. The group won its first Grammy the following year.
Malik B returned as a featured guest on the group’s 2006 album “Game Theory” and “Rising Down” in 2008.
He released two studio albums dubbed ‘Street Assault’ in 2005 and ‘Unpredictable’ in 2015.
