‘It’s Deeply Insulting’ – FFK Berates Tinubu For Failing To Stand Up To Greet Ooni Of Ife At Event (video)
Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, has berated former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, for failing to stand up to greet the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, at the Coronation of the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Gbolahan Lawal Abisogun II in Lagos state on Sunday, September 6.
The Ooni of Ife had arrived at the event and was walking to the high table when he stopped by to greet Tinubu.
As it is the culture of Yorubas, traditional leaders are to be honored by standing up to greet them, however while everyone else around the Ooni of Ife did so, Tinubu was seen on his seat welcoming the monarch.
Following the circulation of the photo and video of the occurrence on social media, some Nigerians called out Tinubu for failing to accord the monarch his respect by standing to his feet. Others have however condemned the monarch for stopping to greet Tinubu.

Airing his opinion about the incident in a tweet posted on Thursday morning, September 10, FFK said it is “insulting and shameful” for Tinubu to have refused to stand up to greet the monarch.
He tweeted;
That the Asiwaju of Bourdillon refused to stand up to greet the Ooni of Ife speaks volumes. This was not only deeply insulting to every Ife & indeed son & daughter of Odua but it is also a crying shame. Would a northern pol. leader refuse to stand up for his traditional ruler?

See some mixed reactions from Nigerians below;
It is even a great height of disrespect to stand up in front of a Yoruba monarch. Tinubu according to culture ought to have prostrated. Ooni seems to enjoy the greetings anyways. I won’t cry more than the bereaved.

Someone that don’t have regards for God is it a king that he will have regard for. Pitiful royalty or kingship had lost it’s virtue since the day Politics crept in.

This picture shows the Monarch came from his back (Blindspot ) the space between them is tight to manoeuvre a standing position..its just one picture you cant even determine what happened. after it’s not the 1st meeting for them😏…@realFFK and cheap political point are 5 and 6.

I think u need to work on ur sense of reasoning.Ooni is the first traditional ruler in Yoruba land. Tinubu refusing to stand up to greet ooni is a total disrespect to the whole of Yoruba land. Even high rank Kings stand to greet ooni.Forget sentiment, Tinubu is a disgrace on this

When you have the kinda money he has, you sit while your money stands, even in the presence of royalty. pic.twitter.com/6RnErQ4mQB

Did Asiwaju go to his palace to insult him. I know the Ooni is young but this idea of him honouring all invitations to invents is wrong. The Ona of Benin and Sultan of sokoto hardly leave thier palace and you can’t go to thier palace to misbehave. people are there to correct you.

the paramount ruler brought this upon himself cause he won’t stay in one place as he travels round looking for what i don’t know..respect is what u earned not what u demand for.. not when u start collecting money 💵 from politicians…to me most traditional rulers have lost it..

That’s highly disrespectful. Ooni does not need to stop going to events because of insolent people like Tinubu.

Ooni of ife is friendly and honors invitations doesn’t mean he should be disrespected
Tinubu as a yoruba leader should have stood up to greet Ooni,tinubu not standing up to greet Ooni is denting our tradition & culture.
As old has Obasanjo is he will prostrate to greet Ooni.
