President Muhammadu Buhari has on Tuesday approved the appointment of DIG Usman Alkali Baba as the acting Inspector General of Police with immediate effect.
Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dangyadi, announced this while briefing State House reporters.
Baba’s appointment is subject to the approval of the Council of State meeting expected to be convened soon.

It would be recalled that Adamu back in February attained the retirement age having done 35 years in service, but the president extended his tenure by three months, which set tongues wagging.
Following this, Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) dragged President Muhammadu Buhari to court over the ‘unconstitutional’ tenure elongation of Adamu.
NBA commenced the legal action at Lagos Division of Federal High Court in Suit No. FHC/L/CS/214/2021.
The defendants in the suit include the President, the IGP himself and Police Service Commission.
According to the minister, Baba’s appointment was carefully made, after the president considered issues of professionalism, competence, and numerous years of service.
The president urged DIG Usman Alkali Baba to among other things ensure that policing reform policies are fully prioritized to engender peace across the country.
The newly appointed acting inspector general of police born on the 1st of March 1963 and hails from Yobe state, bags a Masters in public administration from University of Maiduguri, Borno state in 1997 and a Bachelor of Arts from Bayero Usman University, Kano in 1985.
As part of his policing vision, he aims to enhance police primacy in Nigeria through the provision of motivational and credible leadership, directed at stabilizing internal security and modernizing police operations, facilities and standards within the framework of citizens, consent, trust, and the rule of law.
