Babcock Suspends Activities Ahead Of 2023 General Elections

Foremost Christian private institution, Babcock University has put it’s academic on hold ahead of the coming 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

General elections will be held in Nigeria on 25 February 2023 to elect the President and Vice President and members of the Senate and House of Representatives. Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari is ineligible to run, being term-limited.

In a statement released by the management of Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo in Ogun State, they announced the suspension of academic activities from Wednesday, February 22 till March 14, 2023 following the directive by the National Universities Commission.

The NUC had ordered the closure of universities in the country ahead of the 2023 presidential and governorship elections in the country

The Director, Marketing and Communication of the university, Dr. Joshua Suleiman, disclosed the suspension of academic activities in a letter of notice addressed to students and parents .

The statement read;

Sequel to the directive from the office of the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission to vice chancellors of all universities and inter-university centres in Nigeria, in a letter dated Friday 3rd February 2023, the Senate of Babcock University at her meeting of Friday 10th February 2023 has decided to shut down and suspend academic activities from Wednesday 22nd February 2023 to Tuesday 14th March 2023.

The statement read further,

The National Universities Commission cited the 2023 general elections, which have been scheduled to hold on Saturday 25th February 2023, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, and Saturday 11th March 2023 for the governorship and State Assembly elections respectively, as well as concerns on the security of staff, students and properties of the different institutions during the election period as reasons that informed the directive.

Babcock University as a law-abiding and responsible corporate citizen is complying with the directive and suspending academic activities from Wednesday, February 22, 2023. Consequently, all students should vacate their halls of residence on Wednesday, February 22.

The second semester resumption and online registration for 100 Level & 200 Level Direct Entry/Transfer Students is Wednesday, March 15, 2023, and classes will begin immediately.

According to him, the decision to suspend academic activities was taken by the Senate of the university over the weekend, following the directive from the NUC to VCs of all universities.

Suleiman said all students are to vacate their halls of residence as from Wednesday.

The notice reads further, “Arrival of all other students (200L-600L) is from Thursday, March 16 to Friday, March 17, 2023.

“All students should note that all hall and room allocations remain the same. In other words, they are to check into the hall/room allocated to them prior to vacating campus on Wednesday 22nd February 2023.

“Let us keep safe as we exercise our civic rights.”
