Lagos residents can breathe a sigh of relief – the long-awaited Fourth Mainland Bridge is finally set to begin construction in the coming months, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announcing a “by the end of March or April” timeframe during a town hall meeting on Thursday.
Delivering the keynote address at the Lagos West Senatorial District Town Hall Meeting held at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the project’s significance and pledged a swift start to its development. He emphasized that construction will be executed in phases, ensuring minimal disruption and allowing for adjustments based on progress.
“We’ve done extensive work on the bridge. But we are at the crossroads of where to get the real financing for that kind of project. We’ll need to be very very creative,” he said.
“Our commitment is that within this first quarter, meaning that by the end of March or April, we should break grounds to start the construction of the Fourth Mainland Bridge,” Sanwo-Olu added.
Addressing potential concerns surrounding property displacement, the Governor offered assurance to affected residents. He promised “due compensation” for both landlords and tenants whose structures may be demolished during the construction process. This commitment aims to ensure fairness and transparency throughout the project’s execution.
Sanwo-Olu’s announcement marks a significant milestone for the Fourth Mainland Bridge project, which has been in the pipeline for years. The proposed 37-kilometer bridge, once completed, promises to ease traffic congestion, connect the mainland with Lagos Island, and boost economic activity in the region.
