The Presidency has dismissed reports of a potential merger between opposition parties, saying President Bola Tinubu remains focused on governance and delivering on his agenda for the country.

According to a statement by Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, the President is not bothered by the political maneuverings of the opposition ahead of the 2027 election.

The statement comes on the heels of reports of a possible merger between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party, with some sources suggesting that the parties are in talks to form an alliance ahead of the next general elections.

However, the Presidency has downplayed the reports, saying the President is more concerned with delivering on his promises to Nigerians than engaging in political brinksmanship.

“The President is focused on governance and delivering on his agenda to make the country better and prosperous for her citizens,” Ajayi said. “We should not be a country that is perpetually in election mode and politicking.”

The statement is seen as a sign of confidence by the Presidency, which appears to be unfazed by the opposition’s attempts to regroup and challenge the ruling party.

Analysts say the merger talks are a sign of desperation by the opposition, which has struggled to gain traction since the last general elections.

The development highlights the ongoing political tensions in the country, as the ruling party and the opposition engage in a game of political chess ahead of the next general elections.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the Presidency is focused on delivering on its promises to Nigerians, and the opposition will have to do more to challenge the ruling party’s dominance.
