Cardoso steps in for ailing Edun at World Bank, IMF annual meetings

Olayemi Cardoso, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is set to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) annual meeting in Washington, DC, United States, as Wale Edun, the minister of finance, has been ruled out due to illness, TheCable understands.

In a statement on Sunday, Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on information and strategy, said Edun, who is also the coordinating minister of the economy, is indisposed.

The Nigerian team will comprise Doris Uzoka-Anite, the minister of state for finance, alongside others, at the meeting, which opens on Monday, according to Onanuga.

Also, he noted that the World Bank said the annual meeting will feature key elements such as the development committee plenary session on October 16 and the international monetary and financial committee meetings on October 17.

The spokesperson added that the featured events include regional briefings, press conferences, and fora focused on international development, the global economy, and financial markets.

In its Nigeria Development Update (NDU) report released on October 8, the World Bank advised Nigeria to audit the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, increase health taxes, and the value-added tax (VAT).
