Interim National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has reaffirmed that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, remains a dedicated member of the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Monday, Abdullahi dismissed growing speculation that Obi was planning to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He stressed that the former Anambra State governor is fully aligned with the coalition’s vision and understands the implications of any move back to the PDP.
“Peter remains part of this coalition, regardless of rumours to the contrary,” Abdullahi said. “He is well aware of the risks associated with rejoining the PDP, particularly given that the party still faces significant influence from the ruling APC.”
Abdullahi suggested that the recent resurgence within the PDP may be a response to the momentum gained by the ADC-led alliance, which has quickly positioned itself as a viable alternative to the current administration. However, he clarified that the coalition’s immediate priority is not the selection of a presidential candidate.
“Our party is still in its early stages, barely a month old,” he explained. “Right now, our focus is on building a solid foundation through credible party structures and democratic processes.”
He assured the public that any future decision regarding a flagbearer would be handled with integrity and transparency.
“When the time comes, the process of choosing a candidate will reflect our commitment to internal democracy,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC-led coalition, which includes prominent opposition leaders like Peter Obi, was formed to consolidate efforts toward offering a credible challenge to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
