The Presidency on Wednesday announced that the Federal Government realised ₦20.59 trillion in revenue between January and August 2025, with non-oil receipts accounting for the bulk of collections.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed in a statement that non-oil revenue stood at ₦15.69 trillion, representing about three-quarters of total earnings and signalling a clear shift from dependence on crude oil.

“This strong performance reflects a fundamental restructuring of Nigeria’s fiscal base,” Onanuga said.

President Bola Tinubu had earlier revealed that the government surpassed its 2025 revenue target ahead of schedule, crediting the achievement to reforms that tightened fiscal discipline, improved compliance, and digitised tax administration.

Data from the Presidency shows that collections for the eight-month period rose by 40.5 per cent compared to ₦14.6 trillion recorded in the corresponding period of 2024. Tinubu further noted that, buoyed by the robust fiscal performance, the government has ceased borrowing from domestic banks.

The statement added that stronger revenues had translated into record allocations to states, with monthly disbursements crossing the ₦2 trillion mark for the first time in July.

While hailing the revenue boost as a milestone, Onanuga acknowledged that current inflows remain insufficient to fully address the administration’s funding demands for education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He however assured that measures are being taken to close the gap.

“Nigeria’s fiscal foundations are being reshaped. Oil is no longer the dominant driver of government revenue. The challenge ahead is to ensure these gains translate into better schools, hospitals, roads, and jobs,” he said.

The Budget Office is expected to release the final audited figures at the end of the year.
