Italian PM Meloni urges Nigeria to prosecute perpetrators of violence against Christians

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has urged the Nigerian Federal Government to prosecute those responsible for recent attacks on Christian communities, condemning the violence as “heinous and unacceptable.”

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni issued a strong call on Friday, demanding that Nigerian authorities take decisive action against perpetrators of violence targeting Christian communities. In a statement posted on her official X account, Meloni stressed that religious freedom is an inviolable right and must be protected.

“We strongly condemn the renewed violence that took place today against Christian communities in Nigeria,” she wrote. “Religious freedom is an inviolable right. We ask the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of Christian communities and all religious communities and to prosecute those responsible for these heinous attacks.”

Meloni expressed solidarity with families and communities affected by the attacks, noting that Italy stands with Nigerians living in fear due to religiously motivated violence.

“Italy expresses all its closeness to the victims and to the communities in Nigeria who today feel in danger because of their religion,” she added.

Her remarks come amid reports of fresh violence in parts of Nigeria, where Christian communities have faced repeated assaults by armed groups. The latest incidents have sparked international concern, with calls for stronger security measures and accountability.
