The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has announced reinforced security measures across schools, religious centres, and other public spaces as part of efforts to safeguard residents during the ember months and into the New Year.
Speaking at the command headquarters in Ikeja on Monday, Jimoh assured Lagosians that the state remains secure, noting that additional tactical units have been deployed across local councils.
“We want the public to know that Lagos is safe. Extra deployments have been made to schools, worship centres, and other high-traffic locations, and these measures will continue into the New Year,” he said.
The move comes against the backdrop of escalating insecurity across Nigeria, with recent abductions reported in Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger States.
Vehicle Theft Syndicates
Jimoh also disclosed that a wave of car thefts in Lagos was linked to newly hired drivers and car wash attendants. He revealed that 56 suspects had been arrested for various offences and paraded 10 recovered vehicles, including:
- Toyota Hilux (white)
- Range Rover SUV (white)
- Land Cruiser (black)
- Lexus GX460 SUV (silver)
- Honda CR-V (silver)
- Two Toyota Corollas
- Boxer Bajaj motorcycle (used in a robbery attempt)
Weapons seized from suspects were also displayed, including locally made pistols, a cut-to-size shotgun, a fabricated firearm, cartridges, and a machete.
The commissioner urged residents to be more vigilant, particularly when entrusting vehicles to strangers.
“We must be security conscious. Do not leave your car keys with attendants at car washes or newly engaged drivers,” he cautioned.
Jimoh assured that the police would maintain intensified operations into the New Year, focusing on public institutions and areas with heavy human traffic, as part of Lagos’ ongoing crime-fighting strategy.
