The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports circulating online that the armed forces intend to compel young Nigerians into military service, describing the claims as “false, malicious, and fabricated.”
The denial follows the circulation of a video on social media alleging that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) had announced compulsory conscription for citizens aged 18 and above. The clip, which featured a cloned image of the CDS, quickly went viral, sparking anxiety among youths across the country.
In a statement issued Sunday, Brigadier-General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, said the video was fake and designed to mislead the public.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria has no plan to forcefully enlist young Nigerians. Recruitment remains voluntary and follows due process,” Gusau stated.
He warned that the spread of such disinformation, especially through manipulated videos, was capable of causing unnecessary panic and eroding public trust.
The Nigerian Army also issued a separate clarification, describing the viral post as a “malicious fabrication” intended to incite fear. The Army stressed that recruitment exercises are conducted openly and transparently, and urged Nigerians to disregard the false claims.
