Recent changes at Elon Musk’s X platform have shed light on the foreign roots of many accounts amplifying MAGA and right-wing content in the United States.

On Friday, X rolled out a tool called “About This Account,” which reveals details such as the country where an account was created, how often its username has changed, and the method used to download the app.

Almost immediately, political users began scrutinizing rival accounts, and a striking pattern emerged: dozens of prominent MAGA-linked accounts were not U.S.-based at all. Instead, many originated in India, Russia, and Nigeria, raising fresh concerns about foreign actors profiting from division in American politics.

One account, MAGANationX, which brands itself as “Patriot Voice for We The People,” was shown to have been created in Eastern Europe. Another, MAGA Scope, featuring a tuxedoed image of Donald Trump and an American flag emoji, was revealed to have been launched in Nigeria in 2024.

Questions Over Accuracy

Some users cautioned that the feature may not be entirely reliable, noting that accounts opened while using a VPN could appear to originate from the VPN’s server location rather than the user’s actual country.

X’s Response

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product development, acknowledged the issue, saying the company was working to correct discrepancies and admitted the tool still had “a few rough edges” that would be refined.
