Peter Obi faults Tinubu’s revenue target claim as economic hardship worsens

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s announcement that Nigeria met its 2025 revenue target ahead of schedule, calling the claim “insensitive and troubling” against the backdrop of widespread economic hardship.

In a post shared on his verified X handle on Thursday, Obi questioned the government’s priorities, pointing out that many retirees are still owed pensions and gratuities despite the administration’s boast of excess revenue.

He argued that meeting revenue targets should translate into tangible relief for struggling citizens through investments in job creation and critical sectors. According to him, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and other economic players face severe funding shortages, with some unable to meet financial obligations to banks and employees.

Obi expressed particular concern over continued protests by retired public servants, describing it as “shameful” that citizens who served and defended the nation are left pleading for entitlements due to them.

He maintained that revenue achievements are meaningless if they do not improve living conditions, urging the government to demonstrate responsibility and integrity in governance. “A New Nigeria is possible,” Obi concluded.
